Avipathi Choornam – Benefits, Dosage, Ingredients, Side Effects

Avipathi Choornam is a famous Ayurvedic herbal powder, used in treatment of Pitta imbalance disorders. This product is formulated based on Kerala Ayurveda principles. 

Avipathi Choornam uses:
It is used in Ayurvedic treatment of all types of Pitta imbalance disorders such as gastritis, migraine, excessive burning sensation all over the body, increased thirst and digestion, exhaustion due to sun exposure, sun burn, dizziness etc. It is also useful in treatment of liver disorders such as jaundice.

Avipathy Choornam dose:
1 – 3 grams once or twice  a day, before or after food, or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor. As per textual reference, it is added with little quantity of honey, made into the form of bolus or small tablet and patient is asked to consume it.

Avipathi Churnam ingredients:
10 grams of each of
Trikatu – pepper, long pepper and ginger
Twak – Cinnamon – Cinnamomum zeylanicum
Patra – Cinnamomum tamala
Ela – Cardamom – Elettaria cardamomum
Ambhoda – Musta – Nut grass (root) – Cyperus rotundus
Krimighna – Vidanga – False black pepper – Embelia ribes
Amalaki – Indian gooseberry fruit – Emblica officinalis Gaertn.
Trivrit – Operculina turpethum
Sugar – 100 grams

Side effects: Since it contains sugar, it is not indicated for diabetic people.
Overdosage may cause diarrhoea and stomach ache.
Children, pregnant and lactating mother should seek doctor’s advice before taking this product.

    • Hi, if you mean bleeding ulcer as in ulcerative colitis, then this medicine is not suited.
      But if it is an ulcer in limbs, due to blood disorder, then this medicine is usually used to induce purgation (Virechana Panchakarma therapy) to balance Pitta.

    Is there a maximum amount of time I can take this for? An Ayurvedic doctor gave it to me for digestive issues and constipation but I see it is for extra heat in the body as well? Would it help with excessive sweating all over the body? I have had this problem for years and don’t know the cause or cure :-/ Thanks do much for your help, you have a new follower! :)

  9. Can i use 10gm of avipathichoornam .i am having severe constipation. I want immediate passing of motion. I have just taken a black coffee in the evening. If i take it nowcan will i pass motion immediately. Would be greatful for ur immediate advice. Vasudevan

    • sorry for the delay.
      10gm is not an advisible dose. before self medicating please consult your Ayurvedic doctor and you are supposed to take the same dose of choorna decided by him. overdose may result in diarrhoea and stomach ache.

  11. I have rashes on body where exposing to sun (arms and fore head). one skin specialist told me that it is due to UV light allergy. Gastric problem is also there. Will this medicine help me? If so how to take it. Please give your advice.
