Kumarayasava – Uses, Dose, Side Effects and Ingredients

Kumaryasava is a liquid Ayurvedic medicine used in the treatment of gastritis, urinary tract disorders etc. Kumaryasavam contains 5 – 10 % of self generated alcohol in it. This self generated alcohol and the water present in the product acts as a media to deliver water and alcohol soluble the active herbal components to the body.
Kumari means Aloe vera 
Reference: Yoga Ratnakara, Ayurvedic Formulary of India.

Kumaryasava dose: 12 – 24 ml. one or two times a day, usually advised after food.
If needed, it can be mixed with equal quantity of water.
Kumaryasava uses: 
Kumaryasav is used in the treatment of abdominal distention, bloating, respiratory conditions like cough, cold, wheezing, piles, vata imbalance diseases and certain neurological conditions.
Traditional uses of Kumaryasav-
Bala, Varna, Agni Deepana – improves strength, skin complexion and digestion power.
Bruhmana – It provides nourishment to the body. Useful in weight gain treatment
Rochana – improves taste, useful in anorexia
Vrushya – acts as aphrodisiac
Paktishoola nivarana – useful in relieving abdominal pain due to gastritis and digestive tract disorders
Udara roga – useful in ascites, constipation
Ugra Kshaya – useful in chronic tubverculosis
Meha – urinary tract disorders, diabetes
Udavarta – bloating
Apasmara – useful in epilepsy treatment
Mutrakruchra – dysuria – difficulty in urination
Apasmruti – useful to improve memory
Shukradosha – useful in improving quality of semen and sperm
Ashmari – useful in urinary calculi (stones)
Krimi – useful in intestinal worm infestation
Raktapitta – useful in bleeding disorders

Kumaryasava side effects: A very high dose may cause gastric irritation symptoms.
Caution: This medicine can only be taken under strict medical supervision

Method of manufacturing:
Aloe vera juice is extracted from the leaves and is added with rest of the ingredients. All herbs are taken in coarse powder form. It is kept closed in air tight container for fermentation. After fermentation, the contents are filtered and preserved.

Shelf life:  10 years. Once after opening the bottle, it is better to empty it within 2 months.

Safe for kids?
It is safe to use this medicine in lower dose, in children above 5 years of age.
Pregnancy and lactation –
During pregnancy and lactation period, it is best to avoid this.
Manufacturers: Zandu, Sandu, Dabur, Baidyanath, Arya Vaidya Sala, AVP.
Expiry date: 10 years from the date of manufacture.
Storage: Store in a cool place in tightly closed amber coloured bottle, protect from light and moisture.

  1. Sir, want to know which brand I can trust. Also, from Baidyanath Stable there are two versions. One is Kumariasava No 1 & the other one is Kumariasava no 3 which contains swarnmakshik bhasm in addition to the standard Kumariasava No 1.Is there any real benefit from Kumariasava No 3. Kumariasava no 1 is manufactured by various manufacturing companies but not Kumariasava No 3.

    • Hi, there are three varieties of Kumaryasava. I will write about it in detail sometime. Regarding brand – AVP, Baidyanath, Dabur, AVN, Kottakkal, Sandu etc are good. Wrote those which came to my mind at this moment. Does not mean that other brands are bad.

  2. sir, I have irregular periods problem & Scanty flow. I have under gone vomana & verechana treatment & then advised to take kumarayasava twice daily 4 spoons mixed with equal quantity of water. I’m also suffering from obesity. Is this useful to treat my problem? & i’m taking it before food.

    is kumarayasava medicine safe for a diabetic ?

    • If the fasting blood sugar level is below 150, then a diabetic person can use Kumaryasava in a dose of not more than 20 ml per day, for a limited period of not more than 2 months time.

    can kumaryasava cause weight gain? i have pcos since 15 years and hypothyroidism since 5 years,, periods are getting a little regular with medication, however wight does not seem to reduce. current wt is 75 kgs.

    Hi, sir I have fibroid in uterus, should I take this or not ? Becouse it make self alcohol approx 10% and alcohol is the reason of to increase fibroid.

    • Hi, if it is prescribed by your doctor, then you can take it
      Daily intake of 20 – 30 ml per day would mean that the alcohol content entering the body is only ~2 – 3 ml per day, which does not cause any increase in fibroid.

    • Hi, if periods are not there for four months, it is very difficult to get it back just with Kumaryasava. 15 ml of it, mixed with 20 ml water, 2 times a day after food for 2 weeks can be taken. If still there is no menstruation, please consult a doctor directly.
