Hamsa Mandura Uses, Dose, Ingredients, Side Effects

Iron and iron rust are the best time tested formulations for treatment and prevention of anemia. They are also best known natural nutrient required for formation of blood cells, liver medicines and tissue rejuvenators.

They are either given in form of calx or as an inclusion of many other effective formulations. Hamsa Mandura is one of the most effective formulations for treatment of anemia, pallor, liver disorders, jaundice, swelling and many other disorders.

In this article we will discuss about ingredients and preparation of Hamsa Mandura along with its therapeutic uses.

Therapeutic benefits of Hamsa Mandura

Pandu – anemia, liver disorders
Shotha – swelling of body or body parts
Haleemaka – been compared to biliary cirrhosis, hepatitis, hepatobiliary disease, complicated and advanced stage of jaundice, chronic liver disease
Urustambha – stiffness of thigh
Kamala – jaundice
Arsha – piles

Ingredients

Mandura Churna – soft powder of iron rust
Gomutra – urine of cow
Panchakola – It is used in treatment of anorexia, indigestion, bloating, abdominal colic pain etc.
Pippali – long pepper – Piper longum
Pippali mula – roots of long pepper
Chavya – Piper retrofractum
Chitraka – Plumbago zeylanica
Nagara – Ginger
Devadaru – Cedrus deodara
Musta – Cyperus rotundus
Trikatu – It is stimulative in nature, good for liver, spleen and pancreas, stimulates stomach to produce enzymes. Hence it helps in digestion. It is also good for respiratory system.
Pippali – long pepper
Maricha – black pepper
Shunti – ginger
Triphala – Group of three medicinal fruits
Haritaki – Terminalia chebula
Bibhitaki – Terminalia bellirica
Amalaki – Emblica officinalis
Vidanga – Embelia ribes

Method of Preparation of Hamsa Mandura

Mandura is pounded into smooth powder.
This mandura powder is boiled in 8 times quantity of cow’s urine.
When mandura is properly processed in cow urine and gets dense due to evaporation of urine. when processed mandura is in a semisolid form, the vessel is brought out of contact of fire and kept separately.
Each ingredient mentioned above are taken in 48 grams each approximately and pounded individually.
Weight of each herb powder should also be 48 grams.
Now all powders are mixed together in a mortar and made into homogeneous mixture.
This powder is prepared simultaneously with mandura processing.
Powder is now mixed with mandura processed in cow urine thoroughly until they are mixed properly and become homogenous compound.
Tablets of 1 karsha (10 grams approximately) are prepared, dried in shade and stored in air tight containers.

Dose

1 karsha (10 grams approximately)
Dose can be increased depending on condition of disease and diseased and also on decision of the physician.

Anupana – vehicle

Taken with buttermilk for good results.
Diet also should be predominant in buttermilk. This means to tell that buttermilk should be main food while taking hamsa mandura.

With Other Medicines

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Side effects

In some people this may cause stomach irritation.
Accidental over dosage of iron containing supplements in children can be fatal.
