Kottakkal Gandhakaraja Rasayanam: Uses, Dose, Side Effects

Gandhakaraja Rasayanam is a herbo-mineral jam/paste formulation. This is made of Sulphur,  purified 21 times with herbal teas, in a process called as Bhavana.  

Uses

Uses of Gandhakaraja Rasayanam:
Very efficacious in all wounds.
It is a mild laxative.
It completely cures scabies, itches and visarpa.
Shows good results in skin afflictions and leukoderma.
Effective in syphilis and cancer.
Reputed in roughened skin, cracked feet, itches on hips as an external application.

Indications

Traditional indication:
Improves immunity, fertility and potency – Veeryakara Improves nourishment – pushtikara
Improves body strength and stamina – Drudhadeha
Improves digestion strength – Vahnikara
Improves fertility in men and women – Prajakara
Reileves grey hairs – Kesha Krushnakara

Indicated in –
Diseases arising due to depleted body tissues – such as muscle wasting, tuberculosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, leading to severe weight loss – Dhatu Kshayaja Roga
Itching – Kandu
Skin diseases – Kushta
Diseases pertaining to head, headache – Shiro roga
Toxic conditions – Visha
For the treatment of above conditions, it is administered for a period of two months.
For the treatment of below conditions, it is administered for a period of six months.
Diarrhea, dysentery – Atisara
Malabsorption syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Grahani
Blood vitiation disorders such as abscess, bleeding disorders, vascular disorders etc – Raktadosha
Pain in cardiac region, gastritis – Hrutshoola
Later stages of fever – Jeernajwara
Urinary tract disorders, diabetes – Prameha
Neurological disorders such as paralysis, hemiplegia, neuropathy,  joint disorders etc – Vatavyadhi
Intestine related disorders such as IBS, Ulcerative colitis – Koshtaroga

Ingredients

Ingredients of Gandhakaraja Rasayanam:
Gandhaka (Purified suphur)- 1.000 g
Chaturjata (Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Elettaria cardamomum, Cinnamomum tamala, Mesua ferrea)- 1.600 g
Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)- 1.600 g
Pathya (Terminalia chebula)- 1.600 g
Aksha (Terminalia bellerica)- 1.600 g
Dhatri (Embelica officinale)- 1.600 g
Aushadha (Zingiber officinale)- 1.600 g
Bringaraja (Eclipta alba)- 1.600 g
Ardraka (Zingiber officinale)- 4.000 ml
Sita (Sugar)- 4.000 g
Ghrita (Ghee)- 1.333 ml

Dose, diet rules

Dosage of Gandhakaraja Rasayanam:
Adult dose – 5-10 g, once or twice a day, after food along with water, or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
For children below 5 years of age, it is administered in a very low dose of 1 – 2 grams, once or twice a day or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
For children between 5 – 12 years of age, 2 – 5 grams, once or twice a day, or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.

For external application- this is to be mixed in the oil of Karanja(Pongamia pinnata), Tuvaraka (Hydnocarpus laurifolia), coconut, mustard or neem along with an eight part of pure Sulphur warmed up in the sun and preserved in bottles for application over the affected parts for an hour and washed off with warm water.

Pathya – diet rules-
Saltless diet must be observed. Milk and fruits must be consumed in plenty within digestive capacity.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Side effects, shelf life

Gandhak Rasayan  Side Effects:
Self medication with this medicine is strictly not recommended. Take this only under strict medical supervision.
Take this medicine in precise dose and for limited period of time, as advised by doctor.
Diabetic, hypertensive patients, cardiac patients, obese people, pregnant ladies, lactating mothers and children should take this medicine strictly under medical supervision.
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are diabetic. In diabetic patients, only if the blood sugar is under good control, then this medicine can be given. 
Keep out of reach and sight of children. Store in a dry cool place.

Shelf life: 3 years from the date of manufacture.
