Lakshmanarishtam: Benefits, Dose, Ingredients, Side Effects

Lakshmanarishtam is a liquid Ayurvedic medicine used in the treatment of gynecological disorders. It contains 5 – 10 % of self generated alcohol. The alcohol, along with water acts as media for the herbal active principles.

Uses

Lakshmanarishtam uses –
It is useful in treating menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, irregular periods and heavy periods.

Dose, shelf life

Dose: – 15 – 20 ml, once or twice a day, before or after food, as directed by Ayurvedic doctor. If the taste feels too strong, it can be mixed with equal quantity of water, just before administration.
It can be used for a period of 1 – 2 months.

Shelf life – 10 years from the date of manufacture.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Ingredients, method of preparation

Lakshmanarishtam Ingredients, method of preparation:
Lakshmana – Annona muricata Linn. / Ipomoea sepiaria – 4.8 kg
It is added with 49.152 liters of water, boiled and reduced to 12.288 liters, filtered.
To this water decoction, following ingredients are added.
Jaggery – 9.6 kg
Dhataki – Woodfordia fruticosa – 768 grams
48 grams each of
Musta – Cyperus rotundus
Madhuka – Madhuca longifolia
Bala – Sida cordifolia
Phalatraya – Triphala – Haritaki, Vibhitaki and Amla
Nisha – Turmeric
Daruharidra – Tree turmeric – Berberis aristata
Jeeraka – Cumin seeds
Chandana – Sandalwood
Raktachandana – Pterocarpus marsupium
Ajamoda – Celery
Yavani – Bishop’s weed
Bilva – Aegle marmelos

All the ingredients are kept closed in an air tight container for 1 month, then filtered.

Side effects, manufacturers, reference

Lakshmanarishtam side effects:
High dose may cause amenorrhoea and gastric irritation.
This medicine is not indicated in the treatment of amenorrhoea.
It is safe to use in women trying for conception.
