Patoladi Choornam – Benefits, Dosage, Ingredients, Side Effects

Patoladi Choornam is an Ayurvedic medicine in herbal powder form,used in the treatment of digestive, cardiac and liver disorders. This medicine is formulated based on Kerala Ayurveda principles. 

Uses

Patoladi Choornam uses:
It is used in Ayurvedic treatment of
Hrudroga – cardiac disorders,
Pandu – anemia,
Grahani – sprue, malabsorption syndrome,
Gulma – bloating,
Shoola – abdominal colic,
Aruchi – Anorexia
Jwara – fever
Kamala – Liver disorder, jaundice
Sannipata – chronic fever
Mukharoga – diseases of oral cavity.

Dose

Patoladi Churnam dose: 1- 3 grams once or twice a day, after food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
This medicine is traditionally given along with honey, wine or water, based on disease and patient condition.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Patola – snake gourd – Trichosanthes cucumerica / Trichosanthes dioica
Nimba – Neem – Azadirachta indica
Trayanti – Gentiana kurroo
Tikta – Katuki – Picrorhiza kurroa
Kiratatikta – Swertia chirata
Parpataka – Hedyotis corymbosa
Kutaja – Connessi Bark – Holarrhena antidysenterica
Kutaja phala – fruit
Durva – Bermuda grass – Cynodon dactylon
Madhushigru
Vacha – Acorus calamus
Darvi – Tree Turmeric (stem) – Berberis aristata (bark)
Padmaka – Wild Himalayan Cherry – Prunus cerasoides
Ushira – Khus Khus – Vetiveria zizanioides
yavani – Trachyspermum ammi
Musta – Nut grass (root) – Cyperus rotundus
Chandana – Sandalwood – Santalum album
Sourashtri – Alum
Ativisha – Aconitum heterophyllum
Trikatu – pepper, long pepper and ginger
Twak – Cinnamon – Cinnamomum zeylanicum
Patra – Cinnamomum tamala
Ela – Cardamom – Elettaria cardamomum
Daru – Himalayan cedar (bark) – Cedrus deodara

Side effects

Side effects:
There are no known side effects with this medicine.
However, children, pregnant and lactating mothers should only take this medicine under strict medical supervision

Charaka Samhita reference of Patoladi Churna:

पटोल मूलं रजनीं विडङ्गं त्रिफला त्वचम्||११९||
कम्पिल्लकं नीलिनीं च त्रिवृतां चेति चूर्णयेत्|
षडाद्यान् कार्षिकानन्त्यांस्त्रींश्च द्वित्रिचतुर्गुणान्||१२०||
कृत्वा चूर्णमतो मुष्टिं गवां मूत्रेण ना पिबेत्|
विरिक्तो मृदु भुञ्जीत भोजनं जाङ्गलै रसैः||१२१||
मण्डं पेयां च पीत्वा ना सव्योषं षडहं पयः|
शृतं पिबेत्ततश्चूर्णं पिबेदेवं पुनः पुनः||१२२||
हन्ति सर्वोदराण्येतच्चूर्णं जातोदकान्यपि|
कामलां पाण्डुरोगं च श्वयथुं चापकर्षति||१२३||
पटोलाद्यमिदं चूर्णमुदरेषु प्रपूजितम्|१२४|

kampillakaṃ nīlinīṃ ca trivṛtāṃ ceti cūrṇayet|
ṣaḍādyān kārṣikānantyāṃstrīṃśca dvitricaturguṇān||120||
kṛtvā cūrṇamato muṣṭiṃ gavāṃ mūtreṇa nā pibet|
virikto mṛdu bhuñjīta bhojanaṃ jāṅgalai rasaiḥ||121||
maṇḍaṃ peyāṃ ca pītvā nā savyoṣaṃ ṣaḍahaṃ payaḥ|
śṛtaṃ pibettataścūrṇaṃ pibedevaṃ punaḥ punaḥ||122||

1 Karsa Root of Patola, 1 Karsa Rajani, 1 Karsa Vidanga – Embelia ribes, 1 Karsa fruit Pulp of Haritaki, 1 Karsa fruit Pulp of Amalaki, 2 Karsas Kampillaka, 3 Karsa Nilini and 4 Karsas Trivrt all these drugs is made to powders and given to the patient along with 1 Musti (Pala) of cow’s urine.
This causes purgation.

Thereafter, the patient is given light diet along with meat soup of animals inhabiting arid zone.
For 6 days, thereafter, depending upon the power of digestion, the patient is given Manda (exceedingly thin gruel) or Peya (thin gruel) along with milk boiled by adding Trikatu (Shunti, Pippli and Marica).

Patoladi churan is administered repeatedly.
It cures all types of Udara Rogas even in their Jatodaka Stage (when water starts accumulating in the abdomen). It is also useful in the treatment of Jaundice, anemia and oedema.
This is called Patoladya churna, and it is very effective in the treatment of all types of udara Rogas. [119 ½ – ½ 124]

  1. Dear Doctor, which manufacturer has this choornam? – Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala doesn’t seem to be producing this. Is this available in any other alternate form like a tablet/capsule/arishtam?
