Ashwagandha Thailam – Benefits, How To Use, Ingredients, Side Effects

Ashwagandha Thailam is an Ayurvedic medicine. It is an herbal oil. It is used in the treatment of gout, bleeding disorders, non healing wounds, sperm defects etc.

Benefits

Ashwagandha Thailam Uses:

  • It is used in the treatment of  gout, arthritis, non healing wounds, bleeding disorders, menorrhagia, sperm defects, male and female infertility.

Ashwagandha is a very well known muscle strength enhancer and a good gym supplement.
Its oil is prepared with sesame oil base, by name Ashwagandha oil.
There are three types of oils available with Ashwagandha.
1. Ashwagandha oil –
This is prepared only with Ashwagandha and sesame oil. There are no other herbal ingredients in this oil. 
2. Ashwagandhadi tailam / oil –  
Whenever there is “adi” suffix to an herb, it indicates that there are many other ingredients in this oil, but Ashwagandha is the main ingredient. 
This is a traditional herbal oil, mentioned in Ayurvedic textbooks Chakradatta and Gadanigraha, Taila Prakarana. 
This oil is prepared with Ashwagandha decoction, sesame oil, along with other ingredients such as lotus stalk, sarsaparilla, licorice, raisins, Manjishta, Brihati, Kantakari etc. Interesting to notice here that Ashwagandha is hot in nature but most of the rest of the ingredients are coolant. 
The indications of this oil reads as below: 

पानाभ्यंगानुवासनै: – pāna abhyaṃga anuvāsanai: – This oil can be used for oral consumption in a dose of 3 ml, with warm milk once or twice a day, before food, 
It can be used for massage and also for enema therapy. 
हन्त्यात् – hantyāt – This oil cures 
रक्ताशयं वातं – raktāśayaṃ vātaṃ – decreases Vata Dosha affliction of liver and spleen, promotes blood production 
रक्तपित्तमसृग्दरम्  –  raktapittam asṛgdaram – useful in the treatment of bleeding disorders such as nasal bleeding, ulcerative colitis, heavy periods 
कृशानां पुष्टिबलं कुर्यात्  – kṛśānāṃ puṣṭibalaṃ kuryāt – Improves the nourishment and strength of weak, emaciated people 
मांस वर्द्धनम् – māṃsa varddhanam – Improves muscle mass, muscle bulk, reduces muscle inflammation and injuries quickly. 
This makes the Ashwagandhadi oil, a preferred massage oil to improve muscle bulk for gym goers. It is also useful in muscle wasting associated with paralysis, spasms etc. 
 
रेतो योनि विकारघ्नं – reto yoni vikāraghnaṃ – When used orally or as enema, this oil is excellent in treating disorders of semen and uterus. Meaning, it is useful in the treatment of male and female infertility. In men, it improves testosterone levels, the volume and quality of sperm and semen; In women it improves the nourishment of the  uterus, useful when the endometrial thickness is less and problems related to ovulation. It is also used for the treatment of habitual abortions. 

व्रण दोषापकर्षणम्  – vraṇa doṣa apakarṣaṇam – It heals wound fast, cleanses the wounds off infection,  
षण्ढानपि वृषान् कुर्यात्  – ṣaṇḍhānapi vṛṣān kuryāt  –  It is extremely useful in treating infertility. 

It is very clear that this herbal oil is very useful to improve muscle bulk and also acts as an aphrodisiac. 
So, this is one of the prime oils to improve muscle bulk. 

Only problem with this oil is, not many manufacturers prepare it. 
Punarvasu, Guduchi Ayurveda manufactures it in India. 
If you do not get the Ashwagandhadi oil, 
1. Ashwagandha oil has very similar effects, when used for massage.

For Gym Goers

This product can be taken by people going to gym regularly. It helps to strengthen joints, nerves, muscles and tendons. It accelerates the injury healing process due to potent anti inflammatory, anti oxidant, anti stress and analgesic properties.

Effect on Tridosha – Balances Vata and Pitta.

Method Of Usage

Ashwagandha Tailam  –

It is used for an Ayurveda Panchakarma therapy called as Basti (rectal enema)
It is also used for oral administration in a dose of 1 – 5 ml, before food with water.
It is used for external application, massage etc.

How long to use: It can be used upto 1 – 2 months based on doctor’s prescription.

Precaution if you apply this oil over feet:
If you apply this oil on feet, make sure to wash off thoroughly with water or wipe off with cloth. The oil can make you slippery while walking.
After applying, make sure there are no oil spills on the floor. This can make the floor slippery.

Side Effects

Ashwagandha Taila side effects:

There are no known side effects with this oil on external application. However, oral intake and Basti treatment should only be undertaken with expert advice and guidance.
Over-dosage of oral intake may result in diarrhoea.
Keep out of reach and sight of children. Store in a cool dry place.

Ashwagandha – Winter Cherry / Indian ginseng (root) – Withania somnifera – 4.8 kg
Water for decoction – 12.288 liters, boiled and reduced to 3.072 liters
Taila – Oil of Sesamum indicum – 768 ml
Ksheera – Cow milk – 768 ml
Paste made of fine powder of 192 g each of
Mrinala – Kamala – Lotus – Nelumbium speciosum
Shaluka – Nelumbium speciosum
Bisa – Kamala – Lotus – Nelumbium speciosum
Kinjalka – Kamala – Lotus – Nelumbium speciosum
Malati – Jasminum sambac
Hrivera – Pavonia odorata
Madhuka – Licorice – Glycyrrhiza glabra
Sariva – Indian Sarsaparilla (root) – Hemidesmus indicus
Kamala – Lotus – Nelumbium speciosum – pollen
Meda – Polygonatum cirrhifolium
Punarnava – Spreading Hogweed (spreading hogweed) – Boerhaavia diffusa
Draksha – Dry grapes (Raisins) – Vitis vinifera
Manjishta – Indian Madder (root) – Rubia cordifolia
Brihati – Indian Nightshade (root) – Solanum indicum
Kantakari – Yellow berried night shade (whole plant) – Solanum xanthocarpum
Ela – Cardamom – Elettaria cardamomum
Haritaki – Chebulic Myrobalan (fruit rind) – Terminalia chebula
Vibhitaki – Belliric Myrobalan – Terminalia bellirica
Amalaki -Indian Gooseberry- Emblica officinalis / Phyllanthus emblica
Musta – Nut grass (root) – Cyperus rotundus
Padmaka – Wild Himalayan Cherry (heart wood) – Prunus puddum / cerasoides
Chandana – Sandalwood – Santalum album
All the ingredients are mixed and boiled till total moisture is lost from the oil, filtered.

Shelf life: 3 years from the date of manufacture.

During pregnancy, lactation

If you were using this oil before pregnancy without any allergic reaction, you can continue using this oil even during pregnancy.
If you have not used this product before and wish to use it during pregnancy, better to consult a doctor because it can cause skin allergy in some rare cases.
It is generally considered as safe to use during lactation, however consult your doctor for the right advice.

Can this product be applied after steam therapy?
No. Oil is best applied before steam therapy. This is as per basic Ayurvedic principles.
