Shring Bhasma – Benefits, Dosage, Ingredients, Side Effects, Preparation

Shring Bhasma is an Ayurvedic medicine prepared from Deer horn. It is used in Ayurvedic treatment of heart burn, gastric pain, abdominal colic, asthma etc. This medicine should only be taken strictly under medical supervision.

Uses

It is used in the treatment of gastritis, hiccup, inter-costal neuralgia, asthma, bronchitis, cold, cough, heart burn etc.

Effect on Tridosha – Balances Vata and Pitta.
Colour of the Bhasma – white

Names in different languages:
Sanskrit – Mriga shring
Hindi –  Hiran ke sing
Gujarati – haran na singda
Malyalam – Mankombu
Kannada – Jinke kombu
Tullu – Jinkeda kombu
Marathi – Haran sing
English – Hart’s hurn

Sanskrit Synonyms

Reference of synonyms of mrigshringa is available in ‘ras tarangini’ they are
enashring, vishana, mrigvishana, shringa, mrigshringa, harinshringa

Dosage

250 mg – 500 mg once or twice a day before or after food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor. It is traditionally administered along with ghee or honey.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Side Effects

  • Self medication with this medicine may prove to be dangerous.
  • Take this medicine in precise dose and for limited period of time, as advised by doctor.
  • Keep out of reach and sight of children. Store in a dry cool place.

Shring Bhasma preparation, ingredients, how to make:
Deer Horn is cut into small pieces, burnt in open air. ground to obtain powder. Latex of Arka (Callotropis procera) is added to this, ground well, made into disc shaped cakes, dried,  burnt in absence of air, in 800 – 900 degree Celsius, allowed to self cooling. This process is repeated three times to obtain Bhasma.

Mrigashrunga

Brief history about Mrigashrunga:
In ‘ras sastra’ the use of mrigshring was done for treatment of various disease it’s refence can be found in Athrva veda also.
in Brhat trayi, the refrence is available in ‘susruta samhita’ which describes the ‘masi kalpna’.
Limited reference about this drug is available in books of ras sastra. A short description is available in ‘ras tarangini’

General Description

It is a ‘Jangam dravya’ it is available from deer, especially from antilopes, antelopes are hunted fro various benefits such as horns, skin, meat etc.

Mrigshringa which is used for the purpose of medicine should be long, should possess small outgrowths ; it should be heavy & firm

Shodhana Procedure

purfication procedure:
As such refrence of sodhana procedure are not available but acc to author of ‘Ayurvediya Rasasastra’ Dr. Siddhinandan Mishra it should be boiled in ‘Swarasa or kwath of amla dravya’s.

Marana Procedure


After doing sodhana, 2 types of  marana procedure are available
KRISHNA BHASM PREPARATION – Black coloured Bhasma:
Take mrigshringa & cut it into pieces & then place them in sharava samput and subject it for heating in gajjaputa after it becomes cool open the samput, now obtain the powder & give bhavna with arka kshira, then make it into chakrika’s & again subject to gajjaputa, process should be repeated for 3 times.
Thus  we obtain krishna bhasm of mrigshring

SHWET BHASM PREPARATION – white Bhasma:
Mrigshringa & place them on burning charcoal, when they become hot remove them & make in into powder in khalva yantra & give bhavna with ark kshira, now make it into chaklika’s & subject it to gajaputa by placing them in  sharava samput repeat the process for 3 times.
Thus we obtain the shweta bhasm of mrigshringa.

Therapeutic Uses

Mrigshring bhasm is used efficiently in many diseases as under.

  1. In case of hridaya sula, mrigshrianga bhasma is mixed with ghee or butter & given internally.
  2. in case of parsva sula, bhasm is mixed with honey & given internally.
  3. in case of hikka – hiccups –  bhasm is mixed with kola mahha, apamarga bija & pippali churna & given internally.
  4. in case of Shwasa – asthma, bronchitis, bhasma mixed with bharangi churna, marich churna & pipali churna are given internally.

Dose: 1 – 2  ratti   = (125 to 400 mg)

ANUPANA – co drink: It is adminstered along with cow ghee, honey etc.
