Gulguluthikthakam Kashayam: Uses, Dosage, Side Effects, Ingredients

Guggulutiktam Kashayam is an Ayurvedic medicine used in treating inflammatory conditions of skin, joints and bones. It is in herbal decoction form. It is also available in Kashayam tablet form. 

Uses

Gulguluthikthakam kashayam benefits:

  • It is used in treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis, gout.
  • It is used in non healing wounds, deep seated wounds, abscess, sinuses and fistula.
  • Useful in the treatment of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, allergic dermatitis, hives.
  • An excellent medicine for all types of inflammations especially pertaining to connective tissues, bones and joints.
  • It is also beneficial in skin diseases of Vata-Kapha predominance.
  • Reputed in tubercular glands, boils, scabies, eczema, syphilis and anemia.
  • Used in treating lumbar and cervical spondylosis.
  • In combination with anti-viral medicines, it is used for the treatment of hepatitis.
  • Post viral fever, when the patient complains of body, muscle and joint pains
    Bursitis,  
  • Bursitis trochanterica,
  • Shoulder dislocation pain

Other Indications

Doctors also prescribe this for
Obesity, to lose weight
High cholesterol, high triglycerides and LDL (low density lipo-proteins)
Dark pigmentation on facial skin
Uterine fibroids, fatty liver changes
Avascular necrosis – Because of guggulu element, this product can reach very deep into the tissues and bring in healing. But in further stages of AVN, this product alone need not be sufficient. Panchakarma therapy and other medicines might be required.
Osteo arthritis, osteo-myelitis, sacroiliitis

Effect on Tridosha – Balances Vata and Kapha at the level of skin and joints.

Side effects


In very high doses, it may worsen gastritis.
It is not suited in people with high Pitta conditions (sensitive stomach and skin). In them, further dilution with water might be required. It is best to administer this after food in sensitive stomach patients.
One person complained of red rashes all over the body following its intake after 1 week.
It is best to avoid this during pregnancy.
It can be administered in lower doses during lactation period and in children for shorter period of few weeks of time.

Dose and Adjuvant

Guggulutiktakam kashaya dosage: 

  • 5 – 10 ml, before food, or on empty stomach, once or twice a day or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
  • As per traditional reference, it is advised along with rock alt and jaggery.
  • If the kashayam is concentrated, then it needs to be mixed with equal quantity of water and should be taken.

AVN manufactures this in Kashayam tablet form.
Dose of Guggulutiktam kashayam tablets is 2 tablets 2 times a day before food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.

Adjuvants:
Guggulu fried and ground – 2 gm, honey, purified sulphur, Rasa sindhooram or Siddha makaradhwajam.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Pathya and Synonyms


Broken rice with boiled vegetables and buttermilk.
Try to avoid spicy food
Rock salt, ghee, bitter gourd, elephant yam, plantains, green gram, ginger are good to take.
For indigestion this may be taken in 300 ml of water boiled with 10 gm of black cumin.

Questions

How long does it take to start showing results?
Depends on the dosage and other products suggested with this. Usually 1 – 2 weeks time.

Can this product be taken along with Allopathic medicines (English medicines)?
It may react with some medicines. Consult your doctor for the right advice. When English and Ayurvedic medicines are advised together, it is best to take English medicine first, give a gap of half an hour and then take Ayurvedic medicines.  

Can it be used in people with diabetes?
Yes. But an eye should be kept on the blood sugar level. Your doctor should help you in this regard. This product can reduce blood sugar levels.

It is sold in plastic bottles. Is it fine? 
If the quality of the bottle material is very good, it should not be problem, if stored for a short period of time.

Can this be taken without consulting a doctor?
No. In many cases, this product alone might not work. More often this is given in combination with a few Ayurvedic medicines. Your Ayurveda practitioner will be the best judge to decide on those things.

Can one take non vegetarian food while taking this medicine?
Yes, unless your practitioner has asked to avoid it.

Can this be taken while taking multivitamin tablets?
Yes, generally. Your consulting doctor will be good judge on this topic.
