Osteoarthritis is a painful degenerating joint disease, commonly caused due to ageing process, wear & tear of the body tissues and senile changes. The cartilage designed to act like a cushion between the joints, wear out and breaks down or becomes thin in some areas. This results in disintegration & exposure of articular surfaces causing intense joint pain.

Females suffer more from rheumatoid arthritis than males, there is symmetrical and multiple joint involvement often causing intense and distressing pain, swelling, inflammation & stiffness.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a common form of auto-immune arthritis, wherein due to affection of spinal vertebrae, spine becomes ‘bamboo’ like, and there is progressing stiffness accompanied with pain and immobility.

Gout is another form of acute arthritis. It is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperuricaemia, accompanied with marked inflammation of joints.

Diseases of joints have been described under the headings of amavata, vatarakta, vaavyadhi in Ayurveda. They have got striking similarities with various forms of arthritis described in modern texts.
