Ashta Churnam Uses, Dose, Ingredients, Side Effects

Ashta Churnam is a herbal powder used in digestive tract problems. It contains very safe and easily available herbal spices. Ashta means – 8 – indicating that this product contains 8 ingredients. Churna means powder.

Uses, Effect on dosha

Uses of Ashta Churnam:
First rate in vata-gulma [abdominal or intestinal lumps/ tumors]
Easily cures stomach ache, indigestion, loss of appetite and grahani [irritable bowel syndromes, colitis etc]
Reputed in children’s grahani and diseases caused by evil spirits.
Improves digestion power.
It is used in the treatment of anorexia, indigestion etc.
It is also used in the treatment of Vata imbalance and Vata related diseases like bloating, joint diseases etc.
It is a good diet supplement in Rheumatoid arthritis.
Bursitis  
Bursitis trochanterica
Shoulder dislocation pain
Post viral fever, when the patient complains of body, muscle and joint pains

Effect on Tridosha:
Balances Vata and Kapha Dosha. Slightly increases Pitta Dosha.

Ingredients

Ingredients of Ashta Churnam:
Trikatu
Shunti – Zingiber officinale – Rhizome – 10 grams
Marica – Piper longum – Fruit – 10 grams
and
Pippali – Piper nigrum – Fruit – 10 grams
Ajamoda – Carum roxburghianum – Fruit – 10 grams
Saindhava lavana – Rock salt – 10 grams
Jeerakadvaya
White cumin – Cuminum cyminum – Fruit – 10 grams
Black cumin – Carum carvi – Fruit – 10 grams
Purified Hingu – Asafoetida – Ferula foetida – 10 grams

Method of Preparation

The above ingredients are powdered separately, weighed and mixed together in specified quantity. Powder is packed in a tightly closed containers.
The product is also known as Hingwashtak churna.

Dose, Adjuvant

Dosage of Ashta Churnam: 2-5 gms.

How to take Ashta Choornam? 
It is mixed with a little ghee (clarified butter) and taken with the first bolus of food, two times a day.

Adjuvant:
Shatpala or Sukumara Ghrita with meals
Or in butter milk boiled with dry ginger and curry leaves before meals.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Shelf life, Package, Side effects

Shelf life: 1 year from the date of manufacturing. 
Once opened it should be finished within 2-4 months.

Ashta Choornam side effects: 
In some patients, Hingwastak churna may cause stomach irritation.
One patient complained of developing boils on face and head, 4 days after starting to take it. Because it contains spices like black pepper, ginger and long pepper, in people with high Pitta, it can cause boils and skin disorders with burning sensation.
This is the reason, it is prescribed along with ghee. Ghee balances down Pitta.
Since it contains salt, people with high BP, and kidney related diseases should take care.
It is not advised to take the Hingwastak churna without medical advise.
It can be given during lactation period of mother.
It can be given to children in very low doses.

  1. Hi Everyone, Kerala greenworld spice and ayurvedic reommended this to me for fat reduction along with no chicken and egg for 2 month. Do you think Ashta choornam (svimco) works for fat reduction as well?

  2. Hi Dr. Hebbar, I visited Kerala Greenworld spice and ayurvedic. They recommended me Svimco Ashtachoornam for fat reduction and also asked not to eat egg and chicken for 2 months. Do you think this at all helps? Thanks.

  3. I generally take ashtachoorna mixed with curd whenever i experience stomach discomfort or loose motion . Is this alright ? Also please clarify whether it can be taken while continuously vomiting due to food poison . Thanks.

    For how long after the expiry date can ayurvedic medicines be used? I got the Ashta choornam expired in Nov 2015, not yet opened. I also have some Vyoshadi Vatakam, expired in Dec 2014, not yet opened. Any side effects if they are used?

  6. I will start using it as my doctor gave it to me after taking full history and the lack of energy is my main complain I have bloating but not the main complain. For how long I should use it in order to see result and when to stop using it

  7. Dr Hebbar, which is the better churan to take to heal/ cure GERD – ashta or hingwasthak? If I can’t find ashta will avipattikar be just as good? I can get avipattikar and hingwasthak in the U.S.

      Because you have developed boils, it is better to stop it and consult your Ayurveda doctor for alternatives.

  8. I was told to take 10 g 2 times a day. Is that too much? I looked online and it said maximum was 6 g a day.
    Could you also recommend an ayurveda doctor at Varkala Beach in Kerala.

    • Thank you sir for responding. I had hpylori last year and took allopathy med to cure it but my digestion has become week. Currently I have some bloating and not very loose stools but loose stools some time. It takes 2 to 3 days to settle one started. My friends father an Ayurvedic doctor on consulting over phone has asked me to take kutajarishtam twice a day. Will this help me gain back my digestive strength.
