Nagaradi Kashayam – Ingredients, Uses, Dose, Side Effects

Nagaradi Kashayam is an Ayurvedic herbal decoction, used in the treatment of fever. It is also called Amrutottharam Kashayam. It is also called as Nagaradi Kwatham. 

Benefits, effect on dosha

Nagaradi kashayam benefits:
It is used in all types of fevers. It contains Indian tinospora, ginger and Harad. All the three herbs possess potent antipyretic activity.

Effect on Tridosha: Balances all the three Doshas.

Ingredients

Nagaradi Kashayam Ingredients: 
Nagara – Ginger – Narahasta bhaga -2 parts
Amruta = Giloya = Tinospora cordifolia  – Triphani Sarpa Nayana Bhaga –  6 parts
Haritaki – Terminalia chebula – Hasti Anghri Bhaga (hands and legs) – 4 parts
It is added with 8 parts of water, boiled and reduced to quarter part.

Method of preparation

Method of manufacturing:
All the ingredients in coarse powder form is added with 8 or 16 parts of water, boiled and reduced to 1/4 or 1/8th part, filtered and preserved.

Dose, duration of use, co-drink

Amrutottaram Kashayam dose: 
The dose is 12 – 24 ml, before food, at about 6 am and 6pm or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
It is usually advised to add equal amount of water to the kashayam.
It is usually administered along with a small spoon of sugar.
Dose for children – 3 – 5 ml, mixed with equal or double quantities of water, once or twice a day, 15 minutes before food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.

How long can it be used?
Based on symptoms, it is usually prescribed for a period of 2 – 6 weeks.

Anupana – Sharkara

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Packaging: –200 ml, concentrated Kashayam.
Appearance: dark brown to black
Taste – pungent, hot to bitter, astringent
Common preservative used: Sodium benzoate

Shelf life: 3 years from the date of manufacturing.

Nagaradi kashayam Side Effects: 
There are no known side effects of this medicine.
A very high dose may cause mild stomach irritation and diarrhoea.
It is best to avoid it during pregnancy. It can be administered during lactation period and in children.
