    • It can be taken during pre-conception for sure. During pregnancy, it can be taken, but not really necessary.
It can be taken as a regular tonic by women. Sure. But in low dose. May be 2 – 3 grams per day. But women with PCOS may avoid this as it contains sugar in higher quantity.
Men can have it. It has aphrodisiac, mind calming effect.

      • Thanks.
The formulation that I have is made at home by my friend’s mother and has a combination of Shatavari, Ashwagandha, Vidarikand, Gokharu, Yashtimadhu, Anantmoola, Arjun, Gulvel, Shankhpushpi, Brahmi, Dry ginger powder, Cinnamon, Elaychi powder. Safe pre and during pregnancy? In a dose of 1 or 2 tsp per day?

        • As a general rule, it is best to avoid any kind of medicines / home remedies during pregnancy. The Yashtimadhu (also known as licorice) is best avoided during pregnancy. It may lead to behavioral problems in children. The safety of many herbs in your combination is not yet proved beyond doubt in pregnancy. So, I do not recommend it.
Active lifestyle, gentle oil massage, healthy food and nutrition supplement that gynaecologist advises, is more than good for a healthy pregnancy.

  1. Dear Dr Hebbar,

I would just like to find out if this satavari kalpa and satavari ghulam have the same healing properties. I am undergoing medication for PCO and was given by the ayurvedic doctor the ghulam instead of the kalpa. I seriously believe that i need a more specific medication because of my abnormal condition. Hope you would be able to help. Thanks so much.

  2. Is Shatavari (by itself) only recommended for women? Or can it be taken by men too? I’m wondering if there’s something like Ashwagandha to help stamina but without the Pitta aggravating effect…

    Thank you,

  3. Hi, if it is just delay in periods or longer menstrual cycle, say of 40 days, having aloe vera juice – 25 ml per day may help. If it is too longer then you need to consult an Ayurveda doctor directly. Home remedies alone might not work.

  4. Hello Dr Hebbar,

I’m in my first trimester of pregnancy and considering taking Shatavari powder to help with morning sickness/nausea. Could you clarify if this would help?

Also, the article states that Shatavari should only be taken for 2-4 months. Does that mean I can’t take it during the entire pregnancy and postpartum? I did take Shatavari pre-conception for a few months as well.

    Thanks.

PS: Great Site! I’ve read several articles on your website and found them useful.

  10. Hi, so sorry that you are having gestational diabetes, and shatavari kalpa is contraindicated in such cases as it contains sugar. But you can use shatavari root if you could get it. you can either boil its root in fat free milk or else you can make a paste of root by rubbing on stone and consume it with milk.

  12. No madam. You can take Ashokarishta to regulate your periods.

Note: Please do consult a ayurvedic physician before taking over the counter medication. Because we all are genetically different with different constitutions and patterns, we respond to treatments in many different ways. Hence Standard Ayurvedic Treatments are always individually formulated.

  13. Hi, the phtyo-estrogens do not affect all. The herbs have complex chemical combinations and it is wrong to entirely explain them just with one set of chemicals.
If you already are enjoying benefits of Shatavari, you need not worry about side effects and would suggest you to continue it for 3 – 4 months, before stopping them ( I do not recommend taking any herb longer than that, unless absolutely necessary).

  18. It surely helps to improve lactation – maximum dose is – 2 teaspoon 3 times a day, with a cup of milk. It contributes to weight. But you can start weight reduction measures such as exercise, diet control etc after 3 months (assuming normal delivery)
