Praval Bhasma – Benefits, Dosage, Ingredients, Side Effects

Pravala Bhasma is an Ayurvedic medicine prepared from Coral. It is used in Ayurvedic treatment of cough, asthma, bleeding disorders etc. This medicine should only be taken strictly under medical supervision.

Benefits

It is used in treatment of eye disorders, pthisis, chronic respiratory diseases, cough, cold, bleeding disorders such as nasal bleeding, bleeding hemorrhoids, menorrhagia etc, excessive sweating, night sweating, toxic conditions, painful micturition and leucorrhoea etc.
It improves digestive power, vision power, immunity and skin complexion.

Medicinal Qualities


Rasa (taste) – Madhura – sweet, Amla – sour, Kashaya – astringent
Guna (qualities) – Laghu – light to digest, Snigdha – unctuous, oily
Vipaka (taste conversion after digestion) – Madhura – sweet
Veerya (potency) – Sheeta – coolant
Effect on Tridosha – 
Balances Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Especially Kapha and Vata Dosha.

As a coolant medicine to relieve all types of burning sensation
Diabetic neuropathy
Excess sweating in children
Hair fall, less hair growth, split hairs, rough hair.

Pravala Bhasmam for excess sweating/ hyper-hydrosis:
Excessive sweating in children is usually due to High Pitta or due to calcium deficiency. Praval, being a good source of calcium and a Pitta calming medicine, is very useful in reducing sweating.

Dosage

250 mg once or twice a day before or after food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor. It is traditionally administered along with butter, milk, ghee, sugar, candy or honey.
It is available in capsule form, each Pravala Bhasmam capsule contains 200 mg of it. Usual dose of Praval Bhasmam capsule is 1 capsule 2 times a day before or after food.
Dosage of Prawal Bhasma Chandra Puti:
Adult: 125 mg to 500 mg twice a day.
Children: 1/4 of above dose with milk or honey.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Duration

How long to administer?
Usually it is administered for a period of 2 – 3 months time, based on doctor’s advice.

Side Effects

  • This medicine should only be taken under strict medical supervision.
  • Self medication with this medicine may prove to be dangerous.
  • Over-dosage may cause severe poisonous side effects.
  • It is best avoided in pregnant and lactating mothers and chidren.
  • Take this medicine in precise dose and for limited period of time, as advised by doctor.
  • Keep out of reach and sight of children. Store in a dry cool place.

Pravala Bhasma preparation, ingredients, how to make:
Purified coral pieces are made into fine powder by grinding. It is further ground with aloe vera juice extract / Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus root) juice extract or Jayanti juice extract or cow milk, made into flat, disc shaped cakes, dried, and subjecter to 800 – 900 degree Celsius for 3 – 4 hours. This process is repeated for three times. Finally white coloured Bhasma (Coral calx) is obtained.

Suitable Characteristics

Grahya lakshanas of pravala
The pravala, which is red colour (pakva bimbi phala chaya), round (vratha), without irregularity (avakrakam), slimy (snigdha), not having any crack (avranakam), long (sthula), is used for medicinal preparation.

Undesirable Features


If pravala is pale colour (pandu varna), grayish (dusara), dry (ruksha), having crakes (savranam), having cavities (kotaranvitha), light (nirbara), white (shubra), should not be used for medicinal purpose.

Pravala Shodhana


Pravala is taken in cloth & made into pottali. This pottali is suspended in dola yantra containing either mixture of sarja rasa & green gram or tandula patra swarasa or jayanthi kwatha as medium. Swedana is given for 3 hours

Praval marana


Shoditha pravala is pounded into sukshma choorna. To this either shathavari swarasa or grathakumari swarasa or cow’s milk or jayanthi swarasa is added such that the choorna is completely immersed. Mardana is done till it attains semisolid consistency. Then it is rolled into chakrika, dried in sunlight. The dried chakrika is taken in sharava, sandhi bhandana is done & heated in gaja puta. The whole procedure is repeated 2 to 3 times so that fine bhasma is obtained

Usage of Praval Bhasm in combinations:
Khapaja prakopajanya mutra krichra – Pravala bhasm is administered along with Tandulodaka – rice washed water
Mutrakrichra – dysuria – Pravala bhasma & rasa sindoora, taken along with punarnava & gokshura kwatha
Excess sweating in palm & other part of body – Pravala bhasma with abraka bhasma & vamshalochana taken with vasa swarasa or bhanapsa kashaya

Cough, cold, asthma – Pravala bhasma, shukthi bhasma, rasa sindoora, vamshalochana choorna administered internally.

    i have been suggested to use these tablets twice a day for hair growth. these are helpful hair regrowth…? and daily two tablets can cause any side effect…?
    i am 25 old. I dont have any sugar and B.P.

    My daughter has been advised to take pravala bhasma and bramharasayana in the night for hair loss. For a period of 6 months, is it Ok to continue for a longer time for desired results?. She is 16 and weighs 60 Kg. is it helpful for her to regrow her lost hair? As she shows mild alopecia. Please advice

  3. What is the mechanism of action of this medicine? Does it clot blood.? I’m adviced to take it for excessive menstrual bleeding. I also have PCOS. Is it ok to take this nervine when I have highly irregular periods?

  5. Hi My herbal doc give me this medecine for me for irregular period but last 2 weeks i will take this medecine now i feel week fever drowsy and my period are non stop do I stop this medecine please let me know doctor

  6. Hello Doctor, i have skin infection(pimples in face,head and sometimes in body,back shoulder) for a long time. i met an ayurveda doctor and as per diagnosis i have high pitta and he prescribed the below for 2 times for 1 month.
