Shankh Vati – Benefits, Dosage, Ingredients And Side Effects

Shankha Vati is a tablet, used in Ayurvedic treatment of gastric conditions, dyspepsia, anorexia. It contains should only be used under strict medical supervision. 

Benefits

Shankh Vati uses: 

It is used in Ayurvedic treatment of dyspepsia, low digestion power, anorexia, acid peptic diseases and emaciation.

Effect on Tridosha – Balances Vata and Pitta.

Dose

Shankha Vati dosage:

 250 – 500 mg 1 – 2 times a day, before or after food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.

How long to use? 

It can be used for a period of  1 – 2 months.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Side Effects


This medicine should be taken strictly under medical supervision.
Better to avoid this medicine during pregnant, lactating mothers and children.
Over dosage may cause slight burning sensation in stomach, vomiting, gastritis and nausea.
People with high BP should take this medicine with care, since it contains salt as an ingredient.
Keep out of reach and sight of children. Store in cool dry place.

Shankh Bati ingredients, how to make:
48 g fine powder of each of
Kshara of Chincha – Tamarind – Tamarindus indica
Panchalavana –
Saindhava Lavana – Rock salt
Sauvarchala Lavana – Sochal salt
Samudra Lavana – Common salt
Vida Lavana – Vida salt
Romaka Lavana
Nimbu swarasa – Lemon juice – Quantity Sufficient.
Shankha Bhasma – Bhasma of Conch shell
Hingu – Asa foetida
Shunti – Ginger Rhizome – Zingiber officinalis
Maricha – Black pepper – Piper nigrum
Pippali – Long pepper fruit – Piper longum
Rasa – Herbal purified Mercury – 3 g
Vatsanabha – Aconitum ferox – 3 g
Shuddha Gandhaka – Herbal purified Sulphur – 3 g
The fine powder of solid ingredients is triturated with lemon juice to prepare a paste. From this paste, tablets are prepared, dried and stored.

Expiry Date

Five years from the date of manufacture. Once after opening the container, it is better to empty it before an year.

shankha vati is more of an anti-flatulent antacid and carminative. though indicated in G.I.T. disorders, it is more effective in Upper G.I. disorders like GERD, Non-ulcer Dyspepsia, Eructaions etc.. as it contains more salts, alkalies etc. it should be used with caution and under supervision of a physician in patients with HTN, CAD. though no totally contra-indicated, it can be used with precaution.

  1. Very informative article. Shankhavati also seems to contains Kshara. Does it mean its not good for males who are planning for pregnancy? If it is so then is there any alternative?

  2. Does Shankh Vati help heal peptic ulcers/gastric ulcers, gastritis, or GERD? My main concern is the amount of pain I’m and as well as the inflammation I experience in my abdomen pretty much on a daily basis… Thank you

    Shankha Vati has heavy metal ingredients and hence should only be used under strict medical supervision.

  4. I am 83 yrs old.
    I had a mild case of GERD & my Gastro doctor prescribed Pantocid It. Now he has stopped it after about a year or so. However, I still suffer from Flatulence specially in the morning even after going thru my morning rituals. An ayurvedic doc prescribed Shankvati 2 tablets (100 mgs) once in the morning and once at night after dinner. This has not helped.Yesterday I changed to 1 tablet after b.fast, lunch & dinner (6-7 hrs gap) & 1 tablet at 0200 hrs at night, 6 hrs after dinner on an empty stomach. It seems to have helped as plenty of gas was expelled after b.fast giving me plenty of relief.
    Is it OK? Caan I continue or I have to eat some food at 0200 hrs at night & then take a tablet.
