Nalpamaradi Oil Benefits, How To Use, Ingredients, Side Effects

Nalpamaradi Oil is an Ayurvedic oil used in the treatment of skin diseases with itching such as eczema. This oil is formulated based on Kerala Ayurveda principles. 

Benefits

Nalpamaradi oil uses:

It is used in the treatment of skin diseases, Herpes, Scabies, Eczema, Dermatitis, allergic skin diseases such as ring worm infestation, Blood impurities. This oil is also used as baby massage oil, to relieve any minor skin conditions and to improve skin health since it contains Turmeric and sandalwood.

Doctors also prescribe Nalpamaradhi Tailam for the treatment of:
Allergic hives, prickly heat, psoriasis
Contact dermatitis, Mosquito bite marks, Sun tan, acne scars,
Acne scars, Sun tan – With turmeric and Manjishta as vital ingredients, this herbal oil is very useful in getting rid of sun tan and acne marks.
Mycosis fungoides, pityriasis rosea, eczema
Burn wounds, Burn marks and scars
To whiten dark underarms.
Dark circle remedy, itching in private area, vaginitis.
Useful in mosquito bite scars, sun tan, white heads, sensitive skin.

Nalpamaradi oil is also useful in dark circles under eyes. Take a few drops of the oil onto the finger tips of index and middle fingers and apply gently beneath the eyes over the dark circles. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash off with plain water. Do this once or twice a day.
Effect on Tridosha:  Effective on Pitta skin disorders.

Application on feet

Precaution if you apply this oil over feet:
If you apply this oil on feet, make sure to wash off thoroughly with water or wipe off with cloth. The oil can make you slippery while walking.
After applying, make sure there are no oil spills on the floor. This can make the floor slippery.

Mode of Usage

This oil is meant to be used for external application only. It is applied over the affected skin parts.

For people with oily skin, a few drops of this oil can be applied followed by hot water wash after 30 minutes time. It is not good to keep this oil on body for more time in people with oily skin.

For facial hair

It is used for treating facial hair growth in women. For this purpose, 100 ml of this oil is mixed with 5 grams of turmeric powder and applied over facial hair area, with gentle massage. After 30 minutes, it is washed off.

If this oil is used in men, it does not cause any decrease in facial hair.

Side Effects

Some complain about acne and pimples while using this. For them, it is best to apply only a thin layer of this oil and wash off half an hour after application.
Some people get cold especially with Kera tailam version – made with coconut oil base.

If you have naturally oily skin, applying excess of this oil can lead to increased oiliness. Hence, it is best to use this oil in small quantities.
In case of oily skin associated with open skin pores, it may worsen the condition, especially during winter. Seek your doctor’s advice.

How long to use?  It can be used for a very long period of time, as advised by Doctor.

Using Nalpamaradi oil along with Kumkumadi oil for good skin health babies.
A mix of Kumkumadi and Nalpamaradi oil works best for skin health of babies. Both of these oils are good for improving skin health. But they should be used only after testing it on a small area. Very rarely, using herbal oils can produce allergic skin reactions.

Use of Nalpamaradi oil in the treatment of skin allergies

Test for allergy


100 ml of Nalpamaradi oil, mix it with 10 ml of Kumkumadi oil. First, as a trial, apply only 3 drops of the oil over forearm. Mark the area and watch for any allergic reaction. If there is allergic reaction (red patches, itchiness), then consult a doctor immediately. If there is no allergic reaction, you can use it for massage. Take around 2-3 teaspoons of it, apply to whole body, leave it for 15 minutes, wash off with lukewarm water. Do it once or twice a week. You can also do it daily. Read more about Kumkumadi oil

Can this product be used in infants?
If only your doctor has prescribed, this can be used in infants.

Research

The Nalpamaradi thailam is studied in various colleges such as SDM College, Hassan and Muniyal College, Manipal, Karnakata.  An observational research study on the effect of mahathiktaka ghrita along with nalpamaradi taila lepa in charmadala (atopic dermatitis) was conducted in SDM, Hassan by Dr Shine S Nair.

Keram Vs Tailam

Nalpamaradi keram / Kera tailam  vs Nalpamaradi tailam.
The keram or kera taila version of the oil is made with coconut oil base. The overall effect of this oil is coolant.
It is ideal in high Pitta, during summer, people living in high temperature climates, hot and humid places.
It is not suitable during winter, in cold climatic conditions.

Nalpamaradi oil or Nalpamaradi tailam is prepared with sesame oil base. Overall effect of this oil is hot.
It is suitable during winter, in cold climatic conditions.
It is relatively less suitable in high Pitta, during summer, people living in high temperature climates, hot and humid places.

Principle


In this herbal oil, the herbs are infused in the medium of sesame oil along with herb water decotion. Then the solid waste herb materials are filtered out. Thus, this oil contains oil soluble and water soluble phyto-active principles of medicinal herbs

Nalpamaradi Tailam  ingredients:
Nalpamara – 15 grams of each of group of four types of tree barks – viz
Vata – Ficus benghalensis
Ashwattha – Ficus religiosa
Plaksha – Ficus lacor
Udumbara – Ficus glomerata
Triphala – Haritaki – Terminalia chebula, Vibhitaki – Terminalia bellirica, Amla – Emblica officinalis
Chandana – Sandalwood – Santalum album
Sevya – Vetiveria zizanioides
Kushta – Saussurea lappa
Manjishta – Rubia cordifolia
Chora – Angelica glauca
Tila taila – Oil of Sesamum indicum – 768 ml
3.072 liters of Water decoction prepared from
Paimanjal – wet turmeric – Curcuma longa
Parpata – Fumaria indica

The above combination of herbs, oil and liquid is heated till the oil is prepared, filtered. Nalpamaradi coconut oil is prepared with the same combination, with coconut oil base, in place of sesame oil.

During pregnancy, lactation

If you were using this oil before pregnancy without any allergic reaction, you can continue using this oil even during pregnancy.
If you have not used this product before and wish to use it during pregnancy, better to consult a doctor because it can cause skin allergy in some rare cases.
It is generally considered as safe to use during lactation, however consult your doctor for the right advice.

Can this product be applied after steam therapy?
No. Oil is best applied before steam therapy. This is as per basic Ayurvedic principles.

    • Usually, in oily skin people, this problem occurs if the oil is left on the face for more than half an hour.
      Use just a few drops for facial massage, wash off with Besan powder (or gram flour) or mild soap, within 10 minutes of application.
      If the symptoms persist, it is best to avoid it.
