Ksheerabala taila is a very good rejuvenating medicine that can strengthen the bones and joints. In wear and tear caused due to osteo arthritis, in elders, it can improve joint flexibility and movement and reduce pain.
But in people with joint stiffness Ama – altered digestion and metabolism, when the digestion process is not in order, if Ksheerabala is administered in higher dose, it can worsen the joint stiffness. This is mainly due to the Kapha increasing coolant effect of milk and Bala herb.

Dr JV Hebbar
Ksheerabala taila 101 is an Ayurvedic medicine used extensively in the treatment of neurological diseases such as neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia etc.
It contains Sida cordifolia. It does not decrease blood pressure. In fact Sida cordifolia (Bala) is useful to maintain healthy blood pressure.

“This oil on oral intake in the form of Ksheerabala 101 capsule is believed to bring about nerve regeneration” — is this mentioned in the Ayurveda texts, or is this claim based on contemporary observation?
Yes. It is extensively used in the treatment of ligament tear, neuralgia, neuropathy etc. by 1000s of Ayurvedic doctors across the world.

Can it cause vertigo?
It actually is quite a tricky question. It is an oil preparation. Hence, if it is used in a patient with indigestion (Ama), without using appetizer medicines having ginger, black pepper etc., then it may worsen vertigo.

  3. Dear Dr.Hebbar,

Can you please tell me what are all the side effects of Sheerabala thailam (101) and its contraindications? Who should not take this? I came to learn that it should be avoided in people with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Is that right? Can people with mild hypertension take this? Does it have any gastrointestinal side effects like indigestion or diarrhoea? Can it be taken by people with lactose intolerance? Generally who will benefit by this medicine? Kindly advise. I am a medical doctor practising allopathy and a few patients come to me taking this medicine too. Kindly enlighten me on this subject. Thanks.

    • Dear Dr Shajahan,
It should only be avoided in people with very high cholesterol. In mild high lipid conditions, it can be prescribed.
Same is also true with blood pressure.
It is usually is well tolerated by stomach and intestine. However, it is good to drink a cup of luke warm water after taking this medicine.
If someone is gluten allergic / milk allergic, then he can also show some gastritis symptoms with this medicine, because of milk ingredient.

I was fortunate to be prescribed this product by the ayurvedic doctor at Ananda in the Himalayas.

Right now she is taking only 1 capsule per day and I have stopped because of this.

Note: Because we all are genetically different with different constitutions and patterns, we respond to treatments in many different ways. Hence Standard Ayurvedic Treatments are always individually formulated.

  50. I have heard that sida cordofolia (Bala) contains ephedrine, which in specific doses can cause tachycardia and arrhythmia. If this particular preparation is processed 101 times, I am wondering about the safety profile for general use.

    • Ephedrine is one of the 100s of chemicals that make up Sida cordifolia. It is one of the many alkaloids that it contains. The total content of alkaloid in the areal part of the plant is just 0.085%. IN that, ephedrine is just a small constituent. Hence, there is no fear of ephedrine side effects with Sida cordifolia / ksheerabala 101
