Normal Triphala vs. 1:2:3 or 1:2:4 Triphala

Triphala is a combination of tri = 3, phala = fruits
Haritaki – Chebulic myrobalan
Vibhitaki – Belleric myrobalan
and
Amalaki – Amla fruits

Default rule:
There is a default rule in Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing, which states that if in a composition, if the proportion of individual ingredients.
bhoge anukte tu sāmyaṃ syāt – Sharangdhara Samhita Poorvakhanda, 1st Chapter.

By this rule, if in a description if the word triphala is mentioned, without mentioning the proportions, then by default, it is to be understood as 1:1:1. All the ingredients are taken in equal quantities.

Classical reference:
In the description of herbs Bhavaprakasha Nighantu is probably the most reputed textbook.

It explains,

pathyā bibhīta dhātrīṇāṃ phalaiḥ – Fruits of Haritaki, Vibhitaki and Amla
syāt triphalā – is called Triphala.
samaiḥ – Here, ingredients are taken in equal quantities.
phalatrikañca triphalā sā varā ca prakīrtitā – it is called Phalatrika, Vara (a great medicine)
triphalā kaphapittaghnī – Triphala balances Kapha and Pitta Doshas
meha – Useful in urinary disorders associated with frequent urination, Urinary tract infection, diabetes.
kuṣṭhaharā – useful in skin diseases
sarā – enables easy movement of bowels and contents in all body channels
cakṣuṣyā – good for eyes
dīpanī – kindles digestion strength
rucyā – useful in anorexia
viṣamajvaranāśinī – useful in chronic recurrent fever.
This description by Acharya Bhavamishra, the author of Bhavaprakasha clearly says that the equal proportion of Triphala was most commonly used.

There are only solitary explanations of Triphala, where 1:2:3 or 1:2:4 proportions are mentioned.
This does not mean that an equal proportion combination is better than the 1:2:3 or 4.

Haritaki content
In equal proportions, it is 33 %
In 1:2:3, it is 16.67%.

Out of the three components, Haritaki is more potent in easing the bowels.
So, if you have constipation, then equal quantity Triphala is better than 1:2:3.
If you do not have the constipation issue, then 1:2:3 is better.
Fat burning, cholesterol, obesity reduction, bloating, hoarseness of voice, urinary disorders, abdominal discomfort etc. In these conditions, equal quantity Triphala is better.

Triphala Churna – Ayurvedic Powder for Constipation and Digestive Problems

Hot vs. Cold:
Out of the three, the first 2 fruits are hot and amla is cold.
In 1:2:3, Amla is equal to the other 2 fruits.
So, 1:2:3 version is heat neutral, good for large masses.
Equal proportion Triphala is slightly hot, good for those seeking improvement in digestion, obesity, fever etc.
1:2:4 is colder. Good for those having burning sensation, gastritis etc.

Amla content:
Amla content is higher in 1:2:3 and 4.
So, if you want more amla fruits, vitamin C, antioxidants and seeking improved hair quality, then 1:2:3 or 4 is better for you.

All in all, both have their own advantages, and it is not fair to say that one is better than the other.

Triphala with milk

Triphala contains Amla fruit, which has sour taste. Sour tasting fruits along with milk is contra indicated as per Charaka Samhita, 27th Chapter.
It is also seen that Triphala, when added to milk, curdles it. Hence, Triphala, if taken along with milk can cause digestion weakness and bloating. Hence it is best to avoid milk with Triphala.
If you take Triphala, it is best to wait for at least 30-60 minutes before taking milk.

Triphala with licorice

Under what circumstances Triphala can be administered with licorice?
Answer by Dr JV Hebbar
Triphala and licorice compliment each other very well. When they are used together, they fill the mutual void.
They are useful together,
a. To target common organs of both the herbs, more efficiently – eyes, hair, stomach, intestines, heart, cholesterol, anti aging rejuvenation.
b. To counter slightly hot net effect of triphala with coldness of yashtimadhu. c. Licorice is told as unctuous by Bhavaprakasha. Net effect of triphala is slightly drying, mainly due to astringent taste of Triphala.
d. Triphala is tridoshahara bor more targeted on kapha and Pitta. Licorice being sweet, brings in the vatahara effect to the equation.
e. Triphala with licorice is especially good for eyes. These two, along with Iron calx (Loha bhasma), honey and ghee are made into a medicine called Saptamrita lauha, which is used for the treatment of a variety of eye disorders.

Q: In your Article on ‘Hareetaki’  it is given that it has five tastes including its seed kernel and seed.Because of all these Rasas it is said to Balance Tridoshas.
Does Triphala churnam contain the seed and its kernel powder also? It hasnot been specified whether it is ‘Ushna’ or ‘Sheeta’ herb?

Answer:
Usually only the fruit rinds of Haritaki, Vibhitaki and Amla are used in Triphala. But yet, it balances all the three Doshas.

When it comes to Ushna (hot) or Sheet (cold) – Amla is mildly cold, Haritaki and Vibhitaki are slightly hot. So, overall effect of Triphala is hot.

Q: I would really appreciate if you can advise, how do I take Triphala daily basis, i want to lose my weight, i searched on the web and it is said that we have to take it with honey or lemon, cant i just take with normal water in the night before sleep? or in the early morning?
Answer:
You can take it – one teaspoon with normal water, at night, bed time. Just take the Triphala into your mouth and swallow it with water. You can take it for 3 months.
Is it necessary to take the churna directly in mouth? if yes then why?
Not very necessarily. It is left to your comfort. Some people mix it with water and drink it or if it is advised with honey, they make a paste of it with honey. The point is, it has to enter your stomach. 🙂 The choice of co-drink – warm water, honey etc, is left to your doctor’s choice.

Can I eat triphala churan with honey?
Yes, if you aren’t diabetic. It is good for eyes.

I have seen many says that it helps to lower cholesterol levels, is that so? If yes then for what period one should take it.? Also, I have seen a study where it shows Triphala churna has its own side effects, interesting a website states that it may cause “gastrointestinal problems such as gas, upset stomach and diarrhea” What do you say about this? If the study is not true then can I take Triphala churna as general medicine for improving over all health and lower my cholesterol levels?
Answer:
Triphala churna helps in weight loss and also to lower cholesterol. It can be used for a long period of time. (4 – 6 months), except for pregnant and lactating mothers.
It does not cause gas or stomach upset. But in some people with very sensitive stomach, it may cause loose stools. (it cannot be called as diarrhoea.)
You can take Triphala Choorna to lower your cholesterol.

What are some good ways for thin people to take triphala long term?

3 Ayurvedic Eye Discharge Remedies With Triphala

Article by Dr Raghuram Y.S. MD (Ay) & Dr Manasa, B.A.M.S
Master Sushruta explains that there are four types of eye discharges, called Netra srava.

  • Purulent eye discharges (Puya Srava)
  • Mucus eye discharges (Shleshma Srava or Kaphaja Srava)
  • Blood or blood mixed eye discharges (Raktaja Srava)
  • Watery eye discharges of different colors (Pittaja Srava)

These secretions occur in the inner canthus (inner eye angle).
Effective treatments for in Yoga Ratnakara treatise
Principles behind eye discharge remedies –
These formulations are prepared using herbs which have the below mentioned properties –
Grahi (absorbing)
Shoshaka (drying) properties.
Rasayana effect (rejuvenating, immune modulating)

Therefore, these formulations are used to treat netra sravas and to stop the discharges effectively. Even difficult and chronic cases of netra srava were treated using these formulations comprehensively.

Triphala, Jamun, Rasanjana (extract of Berberis aristata), mango and cotton fruit – all have absorbing and drying properties. They arrest excessive discharges and dry up small amount of discharges. Triphala and Pippali are the best Rasayanas for the eye.

Siravedha or venesection (a form of raktamokshana or bloodletting) is also advised in Netrasrava.

Use of Triphala tea (Kwatha)
Decoction of Triphala (fruits of Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellirica and Emblica officinalis should be skillfully used to treat the netra sravas.

  • In eye discharge due to Kapha(Kaphaja Srava) – Triphala Kwatha should be administered mixed with honey.
  • In eye discharge due to blood vitiation and Pitta – Triphala Kwatha should be used mixed with ghrita or ghee.
  • In eye discharge due to Kapha (Kaphaja Srava) – Triphala Kwatha should be used mixed with long pepper.

Along with these recipes according to the doshas, Sira Vedha or venesection (a form of bloodletting in which the veins around the affected area are cut to let off the contaminated blood) should be performed.

Triphala Collyrium

Collyrium wicks (Anjana Varti) prepared with Triphala is useful as collyrium to relieve discharge. This is useful because of astringent principles.

Seed pulps of the fruits of Haritaki, Bibhitaki and Amalaki are taken in the ration of 3:2:1. They are rubbed in water and wick is prepared (varti). This varti or wick is used to as collyrium in netra sravas.

This is said to arrest even the most stubborn, difficult and chronic discharges occurring from the eyes.

Triphala with Honey

Can Triphala with honey be given for balancing Vata dosha and to relieve neuropathy pain and to improve skin health?
Dr JV Hebbar
Triphala is a simple combination of three fruits – Haritaki, Amla and Vibhitaki. It is extremely useful in a variety of skin diseases. It is used for the treatment of non healing wounds, diabetic foot, abscess, piles, fistula etc. It clears skin infection very effectively.
Triphala mainly balances Kapha and Pitta Dosha. Its dominant taste is astringent and due to it, it can cause dryness.
Triphala and Vata dosha have some love-hate relationship.

Triphala use can cause some amount of skin dryness. Dryness is a quality of Vata dosha. So, Triphala can increase Vata dosha on the skin. But Triphala relieves bloating and acts as a very mild and safe laxative, so it reduces gas and Vata dosha in the gut.

Triphala is an effective anti ageing medicine. It rejuvenates the tissues and organs and is safe for long term use. Ageing and degenerative tissue damage is due to aggravated Vata dosha. So, Triphala balances Vata dosha to rejuvenate the body tissues, especially of liver, digestive tract, eyes and pancreas.

Honey, though sweet, is drying in nature. Therefore honey balances Kapha dosha but it can increase Vata dosha.

So, Triphala with honey is not an ideal combination for Vata balance and to treat neuropathy or such other neurological conditions.
Rather, Triphala with Sesame oil or Triphala with Ksheerabala capsule is a better combination for the said purpose.

Usual dose of Triphala is one teaspoon once or twice a day. If taken with sesame oil, then it is mixed with a teaspoon of sesame oil and swallowed with a cup of lukewarm water.

Triphala with ghee vs Triphala Ghritham

Instead of Triphala ghrita, can Triphala powder be taken with ghee?
Dr JV Hebbar
Triphala is a simple combination of three anti aging fruits – Amla, Haritaki and Vibhitaki.
Triphala ghritha is a medicated ghee. Here, Triphala is cooked with ghee and water. The final product after cooking contains medicinal qualities of Triphala embedded in the ghee medium.
Read: Triphala Ghrita Benefits, Dose, How To Use, Side Effects, Ingredients
Triphala churna is powder mix of these three fruits. It is often advised along with ghee.
Question is, can one be used in the place of the other?

Consider rice and water.
We can cook rice in water and consume it we can consume raw rice powder with water. The difference is very clear.
Triphala ghritha is is a carefully, crafted formulation. Here, first Triphala decoction is made, filtered, then added with ghee and paste of triphala and all these are cooked well to get the triphala ghrita. It is extensively used in eye disorders.

Triphala powder with ghee, on the other hand is used for wound healing, to improve digestion, as mild laxative, used for skin diseases with itching etc.
Both are valid combinations, but meant for different purposes.

Please consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

  7. Sir, triphala is famous for colon cleansing that’s why i started taking it because i don’t get proper pressure in the morning. So, when i take it with water, my problem is solved BUT when i take it with honey (as it was said by you that it can be consumed by honey too), it does not help at all! Only when i mix it with water and take it, then only it helps me, otherwise, it does not WHY? I chose honey because i could not tolerate its taste but now its not proving helpful. 🙁

  10. Dear Doctor, since 8 to 10 years, I have severe itching and acne on scalp (diagnosed as acne miliaris). I took allopathic medicine and it works but it should be taken for months together and hence has lot of side effects. Later I consulted lot of ayurvedic specialists but condition did not resolve. The last doctor suggested me to apply ‘triphala’ on scalp and take bath every day. It gives me immense relief. But few hours after taking bath, the problem again starts. Later I started applying triphala even after bath and leave it on scalp the whole day. This is really working great and for the first time in 8 years, I’m free of intense itch and acne. But I’m only free of symptoms as long as triphala is there on my scalp. I wanted to know if there are any side effects applying triphala 24 hours- 365 days. I’m really happy with it and I have been using it since almost a year without any side effects. your advice would be valuable.
Also please let me know if there is any other better churna to apply for scalp (none of the thailams are working, in fact its worsening). Thank you.

    • Hi, thanks for a very good question. Haritaki and Vibhitaki are having Ushnaveerya – hot potency. Amla is coolant.
So, overall effect of Triphala is slightly hot. But it is not as hot as – say, ginger or long pepper that warm nature people should avoid it.
Warm nature people (Pitta dominant) can tolerate Triphala very well.

    Vamana (vomiting treatment),
    Virechana (purgation treatment) and
Raktamokshana (blood letting) are the priorities of treatments of skin diseases .

Kindly consult a Ayurvedic Physician he/she might lay down these panchakarma procedures accordingly.

  20. Hello Doctor

Thank you for the wonderful article. Your article and most of the Triphala Churna available commercially has all 3 fruits in equal weight.
Some references say to make Triphala in ratio 1:2:4 for Haritaki, Bibhitaki & Amla for long term use? Is that true? What are other ratios in which Triphala can be made and their uses for different conditions?

    • Hi, usually Triphala is – all the three in equal parts.
some sell it with 1:2:4 (Haritaki, Vibhitaki, Amla) based on some rare traditional references. The difference is – the amount of Amalaki is more in the 1:2:4 combination and
      a. it is ideal for those who have diarrhea and who do not wish to have the laxative effect and
      b. it is ideal for those having high Pitta. The excess of Amla, being coolant, nullifies the hotness of haritaki and Vibhitaki. So, Triphala is such is slightly hot. But 1:2:4 Triphala is quite heat neutral.

    • Sookshma Triphala is – regular Triphala – triturated with Kajjali. Here, it carries the same benefits of Triphala, in a smaller dose.
It is said that it yields enhanced effect. Ayurveda Rasashala also markets Sookshma Triphala.

  22. Hello Doctor,

I had written to you earlier on delayed periods and triphala consumption. Is it ok to continue with triphala after periods?
Will consuming just Amla powder give same benefits?

I just found out that the Triphala purchased here in USA has equal proportion of the Haritaki, bibhitaki and Amalaki and was taking this. I have purchased each separate and mixed them in 1:2:4 proportion as mentioned above.

  24. What is the proper ratio of the 3 fruits? Most companies sell 1:1:1 products but I’ve read in some places that it should best be 1:2:4 ratio of bibhitaki:haritaki:amalaki. Its a pretty big difference. What are your thoughts about this and do you know of any company who sells the 1:2:4 version? Thanks

  25. Dear Dr Hebbar,

As per Maharishi Vagabhat, the proportion of fruits in triphala should be 1(haritaki) : 2(bibhitaki) : 3(amla). While most of the churnas sold in market have equal proportion of all three fruits. Can you please elaborate on this.

    Thanks

Have also heard that quality of triphala depends on quality of haritaki as long haritaki is better . Pls suggest any brand using best quality haritaki in making triphala ?

  27. I am a average weight person and I take 1 spoon of triphala +honey+ warm water first thing in the morning. This causes mild diarrhoea towards the end of the motion passing, but my colon is clean enough that I feel hunger immediately. Is this is a form of Nithya Virechana ? Is this good for long term if used daily ?

Now, the sensitivity is back. My sinuses get filled and i start to develop sinus headaches. It is debilitating because even small spurt in sounds, light is irritable. The headache seems to be there for long periods till i take allopathic medicines and then returns back after a month or so.

Does triphala help in my case (1-repitetive bowel movement, 2-sinus headaches trigerred by extreme sensitivity)

  29. How and when should we consume Triphala purely for its polyphenols and anti oxidant benefits, without losing a lot of weight or without going through the laxative effects? Can you also make a video on preparing the Triphala rasayana? Many thanks.

  39. Hello Dr. Hebbar,
I’m regular use of Ayurvedic medicines due to Sinusitis and throat issues I started taking Triphala. For the first month, all symptoms started disappearing including digestive issues like aide reflux… But in the second month, I started getting side effects burning sensation near the hip, and also discomfort in my legs. Felt like something sucking and also difficulty walking. After stopping for a couple of days symptoms stopped. If I continue to take after a week again symptoms appear. I don’t have any health issues. Is this a serious side effect?
