Haridra Khand Benefits, Dose, Side Effects, Ingredients

Haridra Khand is a very famous and highly effective Ayurvedic medicine for allergy. It is in granules form. Its main ingredient is turmeric. It is also known as Haridra Khand, Haridra Khandam.

Benefits

HaridraKhand benefits: 
It is used widely in the treatment of allergic skin diseases, itching skin diseases. It improves skin quality and complexion.
Kandu – itching skin disorders, pruritis
Visphota – blisters
Dadru – fungal skin infections
Sheetapitta, Kotha – allergic skin conditions, hives
Udarda – skin diseases due to skin contact with cold objects

Indications

Ayurveda practitioners also suggest this for the treatment of
Allergic hives
Allergic dermatitis
Dust allergy
Allergic rhinitis with cough due to change of place or change of season.
Melasma
Scalp itching, scalp psoriasis
Erythema annulare centrifugum
Blemishes, allergic dark spots, dermographism
Eosinophilia, itching in private area.

Dosage

Haridra Khanda dose: 
5 – 10 g once or two times a day before or after food, as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
It is usually given along with milk or honey.
Dosage for children below 5 years of age – 1 – 2 grams, once or twice a day, along with a teaspoon of honey or warm water / milk.
Dosage for children between 5 – 12 years of age – 5 grams once or twice a day along with a teaspoon of honey or warm water / milk.
Always consult doctor for the right dose.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic/modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then, after a gap of 15 – 30 minutes, take Ayurvedic medicine or as directed by the physician.

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

With supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

Side effects

Haridrakhandam may cause increased body heat, fullness of abdomen and mouth ulcers. This problem does not occur if it is taken with cow milk.
However, it should always be taken only under medical supervision, after prescription from a qualified Ayurvedic doctor.
It contains iron as ingredient. If you are contra indicated to take iron, then better to avoid it.
Accidental over-dose of iron containing products such as this one, in children may cause severe side effects.
It does not cause weight gain with normal dose, though it contains sugar and ghee.

Kids,pregnancy and lactation

Safe for kids?
It is safe to use this medicine in lower dose (1 – 2 grams per day), in children above 3 years of age.
Pregnancy and lactation –
During pregnancy, it is best to avoid this / take this only under medical supervision.
During lactation period, it can be taken in lower doses, based on doctor’s advice.

How long does it take to start showing results?
Depends on the dosage and other products suggested with this. Usually 1 – 2 weeks time.

Can this product be taken along with Allopathic medicines (English medicines)?
Usually it is well tolerated with allopathic medicines. However, consult your doctor for the right advice. When English and Ayurvedic medicines are advised together, it is best to take English medicine first, give a gap of half an hour and then take Ayurvedic medicines.  

Can it be used in people with diabetes?
Yes. But an eye should be kept on the blood sugar level. Your doctor should help you in this regard. This product can reduce blood sugar levels.

It is sold in plastic bottles. Is it fine? 
If the quality of the bottle material is very good, it should not be problem, if stored for a short period of time.

Can this be taken without consulting a doctor?
No.

Can one take non vegetarian food while taking this medicine?
Yes, unless your practitioner has asked to avoid it.

Is there any Pathya (diet rules to be followed while taking this product?
No product specific diet is mentioned.
Generally, brinjal, potatoes, oily fried items and masalas are better avoided.
use more of Sunflower seed, almond, pine nuts, peanuts, spinach, taro root, flaxseed oil, soyabean, pistachio.
Broccoli, carrots, chard, mustard and turnip greens, mangoes, nuts, papaya, pumpkin, red peppers, spinach, and sunflower seeds, Flax seeds, walnut, sardines, salmon, soyabean, tofu, shrimp, brussel sprout, cauliflower, winter squash, fish oil, egg oil, krill oil, chia seeds, Canola oil, camelia in diet.
If the practitioner has advised diet control based on disease, one has to follow that.

Can this be taken while taking multivitamin tablets?
Yes, generally. Your consulting doctor will be good judge on this topic.
Please note that this contains iron as an ingredient.

Haridrakhanda has ghee. If someone is allergic to milk products, can he take?
Usually milk allergy people can take ghee. Ghee is gluten free. Hence, taking ghee products or even haridrakhanda should not be a problem.

Haridra Khand ingredients: 
Turmeric – 384 g
cow ghee – 288 g
milk – 3.072 liters
sugar candy- 2.4 kg
This mixture is heated to prepare a semi solid mass. It is added with below Prakshepa dravya
Trikatu – Pepper, long pepper and ginger – 48 g each
Cinnamon, Cardamom, Patra (Cinnamomum tamala) – 48 g each
Vidanga – Embelia ribes – 48 g
Trivrit – Operculina turpethum – 48 g
Triphala – Haritaki, Vibhitaki and Amla – 48 g each
Nagakeshar – Mesua ferrea – 48 g
Musta – Cyperus rotundus – 48 g
Lauha bhasma – 48 g

Method of preparation


Ghee is taken in a pan. Add turmeric powder to it. Heat it in mild fire, for 2 – 3 minutes. Stir continuously to make a homogenous mass.
While heating, once turmeric odor starts emitting, stop heating. If you over heat, it may get burnt.
Take pre-boiled milk and sugar candy in another wide mouthed vessel.
To it, add ghee fried, continue heating in mild fire. Stir well.
As you continue heating, the mass starts solidifying. At one stage, take out a small mass in a spatula, allow it to cool down, rub between fingers, it will yield 2 – 3 stable threads.
Take a small piece of content in a spatula and put it into water, it solidifies very quickly and settles at the bottom.
In the beginning stage of heating there will not be any particular appreciable odor. Nearing to the end, you can appreciate typical ghee and turmeric odor.
After observing these three symptoms, stop heating and take it out of fire.
Take the prakshepa dravyas  in powder form and mix them well. Add this powder mix to the ghee-turmeric-milk and sugar candy mass while continuously stirring. Slowly the whole mass gets the shape of granules.

Shelf life

3 years from the date of manufacturing. Once the bottle is opened, it is best to finish it within 4 – 5 months of time
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are diabetic. In diabetic patients, only if the blood sugar is under good control, then this medicine can be given

Storage

 Store in a cool place in tightly closed amber coloured bottle, protect from light and moisture.

    I want to take this for my allergy,sinus and polyps.I am already taking ashwagandha in morning and chyawanprash in evening for general health and immunity. Can i start it along with ashwagandha and chyawanprash?
